BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Southern League released the 2015 baseball schedule and while MGM Park at Beau Rivage is under construction, the league announced Tuesday that Biloxi's new team will open its first home game on April 20, 2015. It will be the first of a 5-game home slate with Jacksonville.
Will the $36 million baseball stadium be ready? If not, Biloxi will pay a $10,000 fine per game for every home game that is missed. That places pressure on the city and the contractors.
Each team in the Southern League will play a 140-game schedule with 70 games on the road and 70 games at home.
The sale and relocation of the Huntsville Stars to Biloxi generated plenty of excitement, excitement that is now giving way to many difficult questions that must be addressed.
Biloxi city officials will be forced to clear some hurdles to come up with enough money to build the baseball stadium since the bids submitted by contractors didn't meet expectations. They must come up with ways to cutback on expenses to build a top-notch stadium.
Last week the Mayor of Huntsville discussed the possibility of the Stars playing the 2015 season in Huntsville, since there are questions on whether or not the stadium in Biloxi will be completed in time for the opening of the new season.
With Tuesday's schedule release by the Southern League, Huntsville is out of the picture for the 2015 season, basically placing pressure on Biloxi officials to speed up the process. It could be a difficult task.
Everyone will have to roll up their sleeves and get down to business.
