Lamar County escaped inmate sought by authorities

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Lamar County Sheriff's Department Deputies are searching for an inmate that walked off a work detail around 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.

According to Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel, Matthew Wayne Thompson, walked off a work detail and stole a county vehicle near Bellevue and Highway 98. The vehicle is a white Ford, 15 passenger van with Lamar County written on the side and pulling a 12 foot black trailer.

The trailer from the stolen van was located in Sandstone off 589. Authorities are now searching for the inmate and county van in that area.

Thompson was sentenced to the Lamar County work program yesterday for committing a non violent crime, which was receiving stolen property.

Rigel stated the inmate was wearing an orange shirt, with inmate worker on the back, and blue jeans.
