BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A Biloxi man is accused of a rape over three decades ago that already sent one falsely accused man to jail for 13 years. Oklahoma authorities have charged Gilbert Duane Harris, 58, of Biloxi, with first-degree rape and forcible sodomy.
WLOX News obtained a mugshot of Harris from the Harrison County Jail back in 2011.
News outlets report in March of 1982, a man got into a woman's apartment in Norman, Oklahoma after she went to bed, threatened her with a knife, and sexually assaulted her.
At the time, they believed the man to be Thomas Webb, 54, of Oklahoma City, who was convicted of the crime and sent to jail. A DNA test later exonerated Webb in 1996 and eventually moved the crosshairs to Gilbert Harris. This week, an arrest warrant was issued for Harris.
Authorities in Oklahoma tell WLOX News he has not yet been arrested here in Mississippi. We're told Harris has spoken with police. And while he admitted to living in Oklahoma at the time, he denied any involvement in the crime.
