Tuesday primary election to decide next Geneva County sheriff

Posted: Updated:
GENEVA CO., AL (WSFA) -

Tuesday voters will head to the polls to determine who will be the next sheriff of Geneva County.

Tony Helms and David Hall are no strangers to law enforcement. Helms has been in law enforcement since 1981 and is currently the chief deputy for the Geneva County Sheriff's Office.

"For 28 years at the sheriffs office I have served the people of Geneva county," Helms said. "Starting as a road deputy working my way up to investigations, commander of the task force, made it up to lieutenant, did criminal investigations and then became chief deputy. The next step up would be this."

Hall started his career in law enforcement in 1991 and is now an officer with the Alabama ABC Board.

"I have experience on three different levels. Started out policing on the city level, worked at the sheriffs office for 10 years, and now I have experience on the state level and it bring that to the sheriffs office," Hall said.

While Hall and Helms experience and vision is very different, both say protecting the people of Geneva County is their main focus.

"I want to get the people more involved back into law enforcement make them more aware of what the criminal justice system is actually doing. The first thing I'm going to try do is get a website up, It's something we've not had, try to get our reserves back up, and get more people back on the street where people can see us," Helms said.

I'm a really big advocate of community policing to have the department, the sheriffs department, involved in the community," Hall said "You know if you are riding down the road and they see someone out on the porch stopping and talking that creates rapport."

Now both say this has been a successful race in their eyes because everyone made it a priority to keep this a clean race with no mud slinging.

Whoever wins Tuesday will become the predecessor to Greg Ward who has been the Geneva County sheriff for the last 20 years.
