BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

They'll be cutting the ribbon on the new Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum in a few weeks. Of course, Hurricane Katrina wiped away the old Seafood Industry Museum. The storm also washed away many of the artifacts. Members of the community have stepped forward to donate items to help tell the story of Biloxi.

The new Maritime and Seafood Industry will open to the public on August 2nd. The $10 million project has produced an architectural marvel.

Workers are busy getting all of the exhibits ready and organizing artifacts like these old tools used by wooden boat builders from the past.

So many of the artifacts were lost in Katrina, but the community has stepped forward to donate items. Several historic boats have been given to the new museum. It's a great example of people rallying around the project.

"The response has been tremendous. I mean now that the museum is in the final stages and getting ready to open we're getting a lot of phone calls with people wanting to donate various artifacts," said Museum Director Robin Krohn David.

The old cupola from the old museum was saved. It will be restored and put on the top of a new gazebo being built on the property.
