TRAFFIC ALERT: 1 lane of I-85 SB near Tiger Town in Opelika now open

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) -

Officials with the City of Opelika say they've opened one lane of Interstate 85 southbound between Exit 56 and Exit 58 near Tiger Town.

Authorities closed all lanes earlier in the morning following a 18-wheeler accident in which the truck sustained a punctured gas tank.

Crews with the Alabama Department of Transportation are on the scene and a HazMat team is en route to clean up the spill.

City officials made the determination that one lane could be opened during the cleanup process, but commuters should know that the opened left lane merges into lanes already under construction.

Those driving through the area should continue to expect slow moving traffic for several miles or seek an alternate route.

Officials have given an estimated closure time of at least two hours, which would put reopening of all lanes around noon, but authorities say they will notify the public when the lanes re-open.
