OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - This year's world cup seems to have attracted more soccer fans than usual in the US.
"Most people can't grasp because their sport is baseball, football. They get a championship every year. This is something you have to wait four years for. It's just huge. It's global. I mean, when you say you're the world champs, you're the world champs," Spencer Buskirk said.
Since the 2014 FIFA World Cup began back in June, business at Big O's in Ocean Springs has been booming.
"It's actually helped business a lot. It's been a great shot in the arm. This time of the year is really the slowest time for sports, but this has been a really nice turnout for the finals. And especially for every USA game, we were a packed house. It's been really, really good for business," owner Oren Zweig said.
Even though business hadn't been the same since the US lost their final game, fans still came out for the love of the sport.
"It's great. And truly, when the United States lost it was kind of sad because we see all those people, we all got together, the guy with the drums, it was a really cool atmosphere. Everyone had a sense of belongingness. It didn't matter where you were from, everyone cheered for USA," Zweig said.
Soccer lovers already look forward to coming out again for 2019's FIFA World Cup tournament, that hopefully has the American team in the finals.
"It was gut wrenching, but at the same time we showed a lot of promise. We've got a bright future ahead, so I'm looking forward to the next world cup. I think we'll go even further," Buskirk said.
