BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Summer fishing is in full swing along the Mississippi Gulf Coast from Bay St. Louis to Moss Point. Reports remain solid from the immediate beachfront to the barrier islands for species ranging from redfish, mackerel to sharks. But for the next month, anglers will not have to own a boat to get in on the action and have a chance to win some cash, too.

The 3rd Annual Mississippi Gulf Coast Charter Boat Captains Deep Sea Fishing Challenge officially kicked off this weekend and runs through August 17 where anglers have a chance to win a share of the $55,000 in prize money. The five-week mini fishing tournament features species like bonito, cobia, king mackerel, redfish, shark, Spanish mackerel and tarpon.

The Deep Sea Challenge, designed to promote South Mississippi and its excellent saltwater fishing, requires no entry fee to fish. But anglers must book one of the participating charter boats during the five-week event to be eligible for the prizes.

Weigh-ins will be held daily at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor and a leaderboard will be updated by tournament officials. Also, the Deep Sea Challenge will include youth and lady anglers divisions.

In terms of current fishing conditions, captain Jay Trochesset of the Silver Dollar said large schools or redfish along with sharks and mackerel have been spotted around Cat Island. He also said sharks are being caught around Horn, Ship and Cat islands.

"We have been catching redfish pretty good the last two weeks," he said. "We've seen a few sharks and plenty of mackerel. Hopefully fishing stays good [for Deep Sea Challenge]."
