MESA, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A 5-year-old girl is dead after she was hit by a pickup truck that ran a red light, police said.

Marlene Mendoza was riding a tricycle in the crosswalk with her parents Saturday around 8 p.m. when the truck struck her, Mesa police spokesman Steve Berry said.

The driver, 43-year-old Maria De Los Angeles Castro Balderas, stopped immediately.

Berry said impairment doesn't seem to be a factor. He said it appears that Balderas failed to see the red light at a mid-block crossing.

There was an officer at the corner of Main and Gilbert who was at the accident immediately, Berry said.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

No others were injured.

The accident occurred on Main Street, which was closed in both directions between Gilbert and Lindsey Roads for most of the night.
