Holyoke police investigating city's first homicide of the year

HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

Police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year.

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Holyoke Police Chief Jim Neiswanger said it was a fight between two men that resulted in a stabbing on the corner of Appleton and Elm streets.

The victim was stabbed in the neck.

He was rushed to Baystate Medical Center where police said he was pronounced dead.

Neiswanger told CBS 3 that while it is too early to discuss motive, he believes this was not a random attack and had nothing to do with the nearby Hispanic Family Festival parade.

"It's an unfortunate event and we hate to see this sort of thing happen," said Neiswanger. "Our last homicide was Sept. 15, so we had gone almost ten months without a homicide. It has nothing to do with the parade. We want everybody to enjoy the parade and have a good day."

Police are looking for a suspect, who they say is a Hispanic male with dark hair.

He was wearing a black shirt, jean shorts and sunglasses and has a medium build.

Sunday afternoon, Mayor Alex Morse released a statement on the murder, which said:

"Like others across our community, I am saddened and angered by this crime. At a time when so many members of our community are joining in common purpose, it is regrettable that a small minority of our citizens persist in violent criminal behavior. But what I can say is that this crime will only strengthen our resolve in building a city in which everyone feels safe, and in which we all play an equal part in shaping the future. In the coming days, I will be calling a meeting of key departments to come up with a plan to address the rampant criminal activity at this particular corner, a notorious hotspot in the city."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Holyoke Police Department.
