BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Summer is always a great time for students to relax and take a break from studies. But, as we get closer to hearing those school bells ring for another year, it's sometimes hard to switch gears. The Rotary Club of Edgewater wanted to help families get ready to go back to school. To do that, the club hosted its 28th annual Children's Health Fair at Edgewater Mall.

"This event's about service and this is our biggest service event of the year," said Stephen Theobald, who serves on the Rotary Club of Edgewater's Board of Directors.

This health fair is a great way for he and his fellow Rotarians to live out their motto: Service above self.

"We're all about these children and their parents and getting information to them and health screenings. And, of course, a little bag of school supplies is cool, too," said Theobald.

There were hundreds of parents filling the lines to get their kids screened for the new school year. Some of the health tests being performed were for hearing, sight, and some sports related checks. For many parents, it was a great opportunity to educate their children.

"We think it's important for our children to be aware of the different issues that could happen in life with health," said Timothy Critzer, father of two.

To provide awareness, the Rotary Club brought almost 30 vendors to the event. While the booths were informative, many added an element of excitement. Margaret Shockley was visiting the health fair for the first time with her great grandsons.

"They're having a good time," she said. She was glad to see a free event like this have such a good turnout.

"It's good that they have these things for children that are not quite as privileged," said Shockley.

And even though it was her first visit, she hoped it wouldn't be her last.

"I really think it's a good thing and I hope they do it every year," said Shockley.

Good news for her, the Rotarians have no plan of shutting it down anytime soon.

"I know it will go at least another 28 [years]," said Theobald.

This year's health fair saw over 400 school-age children file through its lines. That's almost 200 more than last year's turnout.
