Key player in Baby Gabriel's disappearance dies

Posted: Updated:

Jack Smith, the husband of the woman who wanted to adopt Baby Gabriel died Tuesday morning after surviving a single vehicle crash south of Payson.

Smith was traveling southbound on Highway 87 when he somehow lost control, flipping his dark green SUV. He was rushed to Payson Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released.

Friday evening, Tammi Smith, Jack's widow spoke exclusively with CBS 5's Greg Argos. She said Smith was seriously injured with head trauma and injuries to his arm, but was released after asking doctor's to let him leave.

Tuesday morning, Tammi Smith said she woke up around 6 a.m. to give her husband medicine when he started foaming at the mouth from an apparent seizure. He died minutes later. Tammi Smith confirms Payson police have opened a death investigation due to Jack's age and the fact he died in his house.

Jack Smith stood by the side of his wife Tammi throughout the entire Baby Gabriel ordeal. Tammi was convicted of forgery and conspiracy to commit custodial interference while trying to get custody of the toddler.

The medical examiner performed an autopsy on Smith's body, but the results are not yet known. Tuesday, a memorial celebration will be held for Smith at the First Assembly Church in Payson.
