WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) -

Chips were flying at the Wetumpka Wood Carving Competition held in the civic center Thursday and Friday.

The carving school has been around for 29 years and this happens to be the second year for the competition. Instructors and students from around the United States come together to learn things like deep relief carving, carving a fish from cedar, carving a cane, caricature carving and much more.

The competition began on Thursday and sculptures were judged that night. On Friday the instruction began and the carving started around 10 a.m.

While a lot of carvings are carved with only knives, more modern carving techniques are use power tools are used as well.

The Central Alabama Woodcarving Association is hosting the carving school. You can get more information from the website.
