Columbus school superintendent named

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - The Columbus Municipal School Board has selected Phillip Hickman, who is an assistant superintendent in Houston, Texas, schools, as the district's new superintendent.

The school district, which serves more than 4,500 children, has been without a permanent superintendent since Martha Liddell was fired by the school board a year ago. The board appointed Edna McGill as interim superintendent following Liddell's exit.

The school board voted 3-2 Friday to hire Hickman. He was given a four-year contract with an annual salary of $175,000.

Hickman says his main priority is to prepare every student to graduate college and be career ready.

Hickman will start his job in Columbus July 28.

The other finalist for the jobs was David Fonseca, an assistant superintendent in Boone, North Carolina.
