Auburn ranks in top ten of best small towns for education

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

When you consider moving to a new city, chances are one of your first questions is, "how are the schools?"

Good news if that new city is Auburn.

According to a national study, Auburn is one of the best small cities for education in America.

"It takes dedicated teachers, staff and certainly parental involvement and all of those make for a great system, but to be top ten in America for cities our size is pretty significant," explains Mayor Bill Ham.

Movoto.com, a California based real estate brokerage firm and blog, ranked Auburn number five on the list.

The company selected 140 small cities with populations between 50,000 and 60,000 people and collected data from various sources they deemed important including:

-Student-teacher ratio

-Money spent per year per student

-High school graduation rate

-GreatSchools.org rating (based on test scores for the area)

"I think it just reflects the community and the school system as a whole. We've had $50 million in scholarships in past three years, over $17 million this year and we have a 91 percent graduation rate. It just reflects on all the good work going on here," says Daniel Chesser, Media Relations Specialist for Auburn City Schools.

Even with Auburn growing student population and the challenge to accommodate those students, Auburn City Schools has developed a plan to continue the high caliber of education.

"It seems like the school system is growing every year, with a new high school on deck and more to follow. It's one of those things you can't turn these people away, you have to accommodate them, it's a good problem to have," explains Chesser.

"We talk about our schools system growing and new kids coming but people find their information from sources that is how this growth is fueled. People want to be a part of a good thing," says Ham

As Ja-Naya Thompson's short life was celebrated, there were a lot of tears and hugs as hundreds of people paid their respects during the visitation and the funeral service.
