CLANTON, AL (WSFA) -

The Clanton Police Department arrested a man Monday after finding 100 Xanax bars during a routine traffic stop. Authorities said the medication was found in an inappropriately labeled bottle.

The suspect, 60-year-old John Wayne Montgomery, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The police department is aware of the issue on its hands, posting to its official Facebook page "PRESCRIPTION MEDS - A growing problem" and urging citizens to report cases.

Alabama was recently ranked as the No. 1 state in the country for narcotic painkiller prescriptions and ten of the highest prescribing states in the country are in the South.

"These type of cases are becoming more common," the Department said. "The police department is continuing to see a rise in abuse of prescription medications as well as cases of doctor shopping and forging prescriptions."

Taking illegally obtained drugs without a doctor's direction can lead to accidental overdoes.

To report information to the Clanton Police Department call the Secret Witness Line at 205-755-1416.
