Hotel, motel tax to stay in Lauderdale Co.

Posted: Updated:

MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - Lauderdale County supervisors have formally approved a continuance of the local tourism tax.

The Meridian Star reports (http://bit.ly/1ox9aOM ) the Legislature reauthorized the tax this year. With the board of supervisors' action this week, the 2.5 percent tax levied on hotel room will run through 2017.

The tax was originally put in place in 1997 and was renewed by lawmakers every four years.

The tax is imposed on the gross proceeds excluding charges for food, telephone, laundry, beverages and similar charges, from room rental of all hotels and motels in Lauderdale County, according to a copy of the law.

It does not apply to gross proceeds from room rentals for day meetings where the room does not serve as overnight sleeping accommodations. Hotels with 10 or less rental units are exempt.
