VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - Bridge work will limit the Interstate 20 crossing over the Mississippi River at Vicksburg to one lane each way for six weeks beginning Wednesday.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development has hired a Missouri contractor to jack up the span off its piers and reset bearings that are being stressed by tiny movements of the river bottom. The support piers are moving slowly downriver.
During the project, scheduled to run through Aug. 21, the outside lane of I-20 in both directions will be blocked off. Wide loads will be restricted to 18 feet, and may have brief restrictions of 16 and one-half feet. Warning signs will be used on days when the 16-and-one-half-foot restriction is in place. Crews will work 24 hours a day to speed the project.
