Making a change for the better one basketball goal at a time

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

How do you change your neighborhood for the better? A group of young men in the Queens is quietly going about doing so.

Nearly four weeks ago, Savanta Hunter and friends who attended Raines Elementary, began working to transform the basketball court and goals there.

About 10 men and a woman have been removing weeds, clearing gravel and sprucing up the area. They collected money among themselves to buy new basketball rims and painted the goals.

Hunter, a Tougaloo College graduate and local rap artist with Crown Me Entertainment, was tired of waiting for someone to do something for the kids in his neighborhood.

Sunday afternoon they put in another few hours of work. Pitching in are 28 year old Shawn Rowsey, Jayland Hunter of Jackson, 26 year old Marco Ward and 26 year old A.J. N-Imon.

"The goals have been done since I've been in elementary. I'm 26...It gives them hope. It gives them a chance to want to get out there and change. Everybody doesn't have those chances to get the academic scholarships. So sometimes we have to try athletics to find our way out and be the things we want to be," said Hunter.@

The group hopes the kids, community and school system accept their gift and that it encourages others to do the same in their neighborhoods.
