Coast Guard Ends Search For Pilot Of Crashed Airplane

The Coast Guard has called off the search for the pilot of a plane that crashed into the Gulf Saturday.

A Coast Guard spokesman says the chance is slim that the pilot is still alive.

Search crews spotted debris from the crash Saturday afternoon about seven miles southwest of Cat Island. Bad weather is suspected to have caused the crash. According to the Coast Guard, the debris has now sunk, and it can't be located by sea or by air.

The pilot was the only person on board the small plane. Records show the flight was headed from Saint Petersburg, Florida, to Beaumont, Texas.

The Harrison County Sheriff's Department is now handling the investigation.
