Two Georgia men arrested for drug smuggling

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) of El Paso announces the arrest of Thomas Gary Brown and Teddy Joe Johnston, both from Georgia, as part of a seizure of more than 200 pounds of marijuana.

A public affairs spokesperson for the DEA says the pair was driving through a highway checkpoint near the border of Mexico about two weeks ago, and that's where border patrol agents conducted a random search of their vehicle. That's when they discovered the very large amount of drugs hidden inside. From there, the DEA took over the investigation and both Brown and Johnston were taken to the jail in downtown El Paso.

Agents believe the two men were planning to drive all the way back to Georgia with the marijuana. Law enforcement was unable to provide us with pictures of the suspects, but we have file video of Brown from an interview he did with us back in 2010.

Brown once ran for Harris County coroner and he is a part-time employee of the Harris County school district.  A district spokesperson said his job is to act as a mentor for the parents of children with special needs disabilities. Brown was recently released on bond, and WTVM's Dante Renzulli spoke to him by phone, but he declined to make a statement regarding this matter.

This is the second time in about two months that we've learned an employee of the school district was arrested on charges related to marijuana. A high school teacher was accused of allowing students to smoke at her house in April 2014.

According to motions filed in federal court, both Brown and Johnston face potential jail sentences of more than 10 years each.
