Local Man Honored For His Life-Saving Heroics

A Pascagoula attorney is a hero to a 10-year-old boy and his family.

Vincent Castigliola recently received the Carnegie Hero award for saving Jacob Powers from drowning in the Gulf last year. The incident happened while Castigliola and his wife were on the beach near Gulf Shores in Alabama.

Powers and his father were caught in the current more than a hundred feet away, so Castigliola swam out, and carried little Jacob on his back to the shore. He says it feels good to receive recognition, but the appreciation from the family was the best award of all.

"I was talking to the father, and [the son] was laying on the beach really and truly exhausted, plus he had been in the water a long time. The water was cold, and I'm sure he was a bit hypothermic. All [the father] could say was you saved my son's live and that's all he could say," Castigliola said.

Twenty-two other people across the United States and Canada also received the Carnegie Hero Award.
