KEMPER COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The cost of Mississippi Power's lignite plant actually went down last month. A new report from the power company says the Kemper County plant will still cost in excess of $5.5 billion. That is still almost double what Mississippi Power expected it would pay to build its new plant.
However, that price tag is almost $2 million less than what Mississippi Power reported a month ago.
"The next significant milestone will be the heat up of the gasifier," said Mississippi Power Media Relations Director Natalie Campen. "That turns the lignite into gas, and eventually into electricity."
The gasifier test is expected to take place later this summer. The report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission says the entire Kemper County facility should be on line in the first half of 2015.
