McDaniel: I'm not going down without a fight

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

If you thought all the drama that came with the Republican Senate race would end after the runoff election last week, then you thought wrong.

Chris McDaniel is not giving up. In fact, he sent a statement to his supporters on Wednesday morning telling them that he is not going to back down without a fight, and asking for additional monetary help from them.

"Dear Supporter,

Thanks to illegal voting from liberal Democrats, my opponent stole last week's runoff election, but I'm not going down without a fight. I have not given up on sending my conservative values to Washington. Please, stand with me as I fight this injustice until the very end.

Last week's runoff election was a sham, plain and simple. Across the state, Democrats took to the polls to vote in the Republican primary to make sure that Thad Cochran could return to Washington to keep pushing for reckless spending in the senate.

We've already found thousands of irregularities in the voting process. According to Mississippi state law, Democrats who voted in the Democratic primary cannot vote in the Republican runoff, and that is exactly what happened.

We have a long fight ahead of us. I know exactly how long and frustrating court battles can be, but I believe this will be worth it. There is too much at stake to back down from this fight.

The problem is that court cases are expensive, and we don't currently have the resources to mount the legal challenge that this case deserves. Please, take a moment to contribute to the Election Challenge Fund to help me contest this corrupt election.

I've seen conservative from around the country come together because you believe in my conservative principles, and I'm counting on you again to help make sure that a fair election took place last week. Can you donate $50 to make sure that I can mount a legal challenge against last week's shameful election?"

We asked the Secretary of State's Office a few questions regarding what exactly McDaniel can and can't do at this point.

Some people have insisted to us that he could run as an Independent in November.

According to the Secretary of State's Office, however, the qualifying deadline has already passed, so no other candidates may qualify for the race.

Others are saying that McDaniel could still win as a write-in candidate. However, write-in votes only count in the event of death, resignation or removal of a candidate.

We also asked the Secretary of State's Office if McDaniel's only chance of winning the Senate seat at this point would be a successful challenge of the outcome that leads to the original election being thrown out.

They told us that only a court of competent jurisdiction may order a new election.

McDaniel has clearly stated, however, that he isn't going down without a fight.

We will continue to update this story as the events unfold.
