HOOVER, AL (WBRC) -

Officials have released the name of the man who died in an apparent suicide before a home exploded in Hoover on Sunday morning.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the person as Sterling H. Womble, 42, on Tuesday.

On Monday, the coroner determined that Womble died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound.

Authorities say there is evidence that two fires were intentionally set and ignited an accelerant which ultimately caused the explosion.

Police were called to a home in the 1800 block of Burning Tree Circle just before noon on Sunday after getting reports of an explosion.

The caller and two other residents escaped the house unharmed. Hoover firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within minutes, according to police.

At that point, authorities found Womble deceased in a downstairs bedroom. Evidence of possible explosive materials was found nearby.

Once the fire was completely out, the Hoover Police Explosive Ordinance Unit cleared the home so authorities could recover the Womble's body.

Lynne Remke lives just across the street from where the explosion happened. She believes it was an isolated incident and does not reflect the neighborhood as a whole.

"I'm not overly concerned about it. It's a nice neighborhood and we have wonderful neighbors and the homeowners are good neighbors and I'm not overly concerned about it happening here. I'm not going to get bent out of shape because it's a great neighborhood," Remke said.

No additional information is available at this time on the case.
