HURLEY, MS (WLOX) - Seth Smith knows what it takes to build a winning football program. He served as an assistant coach at Picayune and later at Pearl River Central before becoming head coach at East Central High School in 2013.
Despite posting only one game under the win column, Smith says the building blocks have been laid down by a group of young men who gave their all last season.
Smith said," You know you lay down the foundation. We had ten seniors. I think those guys played hard, played with their heart and that's what we want. And hopefully what they gave us we can spring forward into this year."
Coach Smith is using 7-on-7 competitions to get his quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers on the same page offensively.
Quarterback Jarik Biggs takes over for Justin Plummer who graduated. Smith must also replace both starting running backs who piled up more than two-thousand rushing yards combined in 2013.
Smith says he and his coaching staff are doing everything possible to upgrade a football team that is in the process of building confidence during the off-season.
"There's no excuse from year-one to year-two, we've got our fingerprints on the program, we've been in the weight room so if there's not a significant jump from a first-year to a second-year, then I'll know that I'm the problem because we've got the kids here to be successful,"stated Smith. "It's just a matter of us coaches putting them in a spot to go outside and be successful."
Coach Smith has a proven record as an assistant coach, highly capable of motivating players and is turning up the heat this season in hopes of building a successful football program in Hurley.
