JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The week-long Freedom Summer activities are coming to a close.

Saturday was the last full day of Freedom Summer conferences and workshops at Tougaloo College.

Saturday morning several Congressional leaders, including Representative Bennie Thompson and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton participated in a panel discussion called "Our Southern Strategy: Where Do We Go From Here."

Issues like crime, education and student loans were discussed.

Both Representatives told us that while things are not perfect now, progress has been made in Mississippi.

"It was a state where there was no respect for the law and order for black people. This is a different state today and I take my hat off to Mississippi," said Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) District of Columbia.

"We're moving, not as fast as we need to do and move, but we're moving," added Rep. Bennie Thompson (D) MS 2nd District.

Freedom Summer activities end on Sunday with a Farewell Service at 11 a.m.
