MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

If you've been paying any attention to sports headlines, you'll see a lot of talk about the World Cup. Although soccer isn't the most popular sport here in South Mississippi, a semi-professional soccer club is trying to change that by introducing the sport to children.

Dozens of children made their way to the soccer field of Moss Point High for an hour of soccer fun with Real South United players on Friday.

"We're bringing all these resources together for a common good, and that's to promote the idea of soccer. We're trying to do that by engaging our young people as well," President of Business Operations Jeremy Anderson said.

"Most of the kids that we saw tonight have never played ever in their life, so it's something brand new to them and that's all we're doing, showing them something that the rest of the world does. We want to see them do what everybody else is doing," said Head Coach Chad Smith.

Players like Ethan Gilkey say promotional events, like this, is what makes him enjoy the sport. Gilkey said he hopes he can pass down his love of soccer to younger generations.

"A lot of these kids, especially in the Boys and Girls Club, they don't really have that big popular figure in their life, and it's good for us to show them that we are here for them. I hope they take that they throw that football stuff away and play the real futbol," Gilkey said.

This is the first year the semi-pro club has done a program like this, and from Friday night's turnout, they look forward to bringing even more kids out next year.
