CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hundreds gathered in front of the Nissan plant in Canton Friday afternoon, rallying for worker's rights.  Students, Nissan employees and representatives with United Auto Workers held a protest over what they say is the company's anti-Union stance.

Actor Danny Glover also spoke about workers rights and fair wages. UAW says the students did so to honor the memory of so many who fought to advance voting rights during Freedom Summer 50 years ago.

"Phrasing this, labor rights as civil rights, I think is very important," Ole Miss journalism professor Joe Atkins said. "I think Martin Luther King was doing that when he came down to Memphis to support the sanitation workers."

However, some Nissan employees like Kimberly Erving say it's wrong to use an event like that for a stand promoting unions.

"It puts a bad taste in my mouth against the union because they should not use what Medgar Evers, Martin Luther King and all the other blacks who made it possible for us to get where we are today," Erving said. "It's just not right."

Nissan held its own Freedom Summer event on Monday, and made no mention of unions.

The company says its employees have the right to choose whether or not they want union representation, but have chosen not to do so thus far.
