WLOX Editorial: Smoking invades other people's space

There's a movement in Gautier Mississippi that is about personal freedom and rights. People's personal freedom is all important. Gautier is banning smoking in most public places.

Some who smoke say smokers are losing their rights. We would disagree. You still have the right to smoke if you want.

But all those around you also have personal rights. Rights not to breathe your second hand smoke. Personal rights should only extend until you invade the personal rights of others.

Here's an example: You have the personal right to swing your arms all you want. That is until you hit the person next to you.

This smoking ban in public places is really a preservation of the personal rights of those who don't smoke.  They do not want to be hit with your smoke.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com.
