GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Gulfport Police say a shoplifting suspect driving a stolen truck led them on a high speed chase Wednesday night before crashing near Jones Park.

It started around 6:30pm when officers responded to a shoplifting complaint at Walmart on Highway 49. They were told a man took cologne from a fragrance display, then left without paying for the items. The suspect was seen getting into a 2007 Ford F150, and driving out of the parking lot south on Three Rivers Road and east on Airport Road.

Investigators then learned the truck was stolen from George County.

Officers caught up with the man around Hewes Avenue and Glover Street, but when they tried to pull him over, he took off.

The driver made his way on to Highway 90 and eventually crashed near 20th Avenue.

Three people were injured in the crash, and all were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police identified the driver as Kentrell Beamer, 32, of Pascagoula. Thursday, he was still hospitalized due to the severity of his injuries. For that reason, criminal charges are still pending. The investigation is ongoing.
