Yates Construction - Business Matters

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi's biggest construction company is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. If the work along Interstate 55 in Madison County is any indication Yates Construction is not resting on their laurels.

Their reputation has been built on successful projects and satisfied clients since the company was founded in Philadelphia in 1964. The company's vice president of the Jackson Division, Paul Musick said each successful project is another building block for the Yates reputation.

"I think you take a lot of pride in not only that we did the project but we did it the right way," Musick said.

Projects are numerous and high profile for the diverse company. Yates built the Nissan plant in Canton, the Outlets of Mississippi, Trustmark Park and the U.S. District Courthouse in Jackson.

While their portfolio includes projects all over the industrial and governmental spectrum, it was one industry in particular that propelled Yates to becoming the biggest construction company in Mississippi.

"Until the gaming came around in 1992 we were a successful company before, but it was kind of a game changer with the casinos coming in," Musick said.

Yates built the Beau Rivage on the Gulf Coast and the Golden Moon hotel and casino in Neshoba County, where the company got its start three generations ago.

Still headquartered in Philadelphia the company remains family owned with William Yates now calling the shots. Meanwhile, his father Bill Yates is chairman of the board.

"Bill Yates made up his mind a long time ago, he wanted his company to survive him and be bigger than him," Musick said. "It started out with 13 employees and we now have 12,000."

Yates now has 25 offices throughout North America, including Mexico where they just finished building another manufacturing plant for Nissan.
