McDaniel supporters watch results in Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A crowded Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg housed supporters of a Tea Party hopeful Tuesday night.

"Chris is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in," said Senator Phillip Gandy of candidate Chris McDaniel.

Gandy joined Sen. Billy Hudson at a table in front of the television where results were streaming Tuesday. Both have been big supporters of McDaniel even before he announced his candidacy to take on six-term senator Thad Cochran last October.

"He's (McDaniel) the reason I ran for this seat," said Gandy. "He's a man of integrity and character."

McDaniel led the June 3 primary by less than one percent of the vote, and campaign communications director Noel Fritsch said it's up to the same counties this time around to help pull him through.

Fritsch said Jackson and Desoto counties will be two of the major areas the campaign will watch Tuesday night. Both counties were big wins for McDaniel earlier this month.

McDaniel's home county, Jones, was an obvious home-run last time, and the entire Pine Belt helped McDaniel get the edge in the primary.

If McDaniel wins Tuesday's runoff, he will face democrat Travis Childers in November. Childers has previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives.
