McDaniel draws even with Cochran

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

With more than 85 percent of the votes counted, challenger Chris McDaniel has drawn even with Incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran.

Cochran jumped out to an early lead after the vote counting began on Tuesday, but McDaniel kept the margin thin all evening.

Candidates and their supporters are gathering at watch parties across the state.

Did Thad Cochran do enough to convince Republicans he deserves another shot to run for a seventh term in the United States Senate? Or has Chris McDaniel given his Tea Party backers a berth in the November general election?

Over the next few hours, Republicans across Mississippi will watch as ballots are counted.

This GOP Senate runoff has the eyes of a nation focused on the Magnolia State. People everywhere want to know if Thad Cochran or Chris McDaniel will win their party's nomination.

The winner tonight meets Travis Childers and Shawn O'Hara on November 4.

The Pascagoula Panthers open the 2017 football season on the road. In fact, their first three games are road contests. That scheduling quirk may give field turf crews just enough time to get War Memorial Stadium ready for the September 8 home opener. The wet weather in South Mississippi is placing quite the burden on construction workers as they attempt to complete stadium renovations. The project was suppose to be finished before the beginning of Pascagoula's football season.
