Man suffers injuries from homemade explosive device

Posted: Updated:

A Pass Christian man is recovering from injuries he sustained after a homemade explosive device he created accidentally detonated on Sunday.

Harrison County Sheriff Melvin Brisolara said 65-year-old Drayton Wayland Smith was designing and creating homemade devices using live shotgun rounds and tripwires at his home located in the 12000 block of B Necaise Road.

Authorities said Smith was making the devices to keep trespassers off his property.

Brisolara said responding investigators found the blast had severely injured Smith's left hand, and he was transported to a local hospital, treated and later released.

Brisolara said his department contacted agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to assist with the investigation. He said Smith has not been charged with any crimes at this time, but the investigation is still ongoing.
