SOUTHAVEN, MS -

(WMC) - A paid field representative for Thad Cochran's campaign was fired, according to Cochran's campaign manager. In addition to being fired from the campaign, Lee Blair resigned from his position as DeSoto County Republican Club's vice president and from the DeSoto County Republican party's executive committee.

Blair is accused of damaging and stealing several of Cochran's opponent's campaign signs. A warrant was issued for his arrest Sunday night after a police report was filed.

WMC Action News 5's Michael Clark reports that Blair arrived at Southaven Police Department on Monday morning to turn himself in. He was released on a $350 bond and is charged with malicious mischief, which is a misdemeanor.

Afterward, Blair denied the claims against him but reminded people to "get out and vote" on Tuesday.

"He had the campaign sign balled up in his hand, which I then took a picture of him," said one Chris McDaniel supporter, who asked to have his identity concealed in fear of retaliation. "Knowing that there's a conglomerate of signs at the intersection of Pleasant Hill and Goodman Road and they were heading in that direction, I figured I would follow them to see if they did anything there."

Now in Olive Branch, the man says he watched Blair get out of the truck and run toward signs, but none were taken because he called police. He says more McDaniel signs were found in the back of the truck.

"I asked him what he was doing, and he said it was a code infraction, and that he was going to remove the signs, and I told him that was not his decision," said the McDaniel supporter, who filed a police report.

Cochran's campaign manager, Jordan Russell, said Blair was fired because "unlike Chris McDaniel, we don't tolerate that." In response, a McDaniel spokesperson said, "No one from our campaign had a warrant issued for their arrest."

The runoff election between Cochran and McDaniel is said to be one of the biggest in the country.

On Tuesday, Republican voters in Mississippi will choose between longtime Senator Cochran and challenger McDaniel.
