OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

An Ocean Springs cemetery with ties to the 1700s has been taken over by water oaks. The roots and limbs of the trees are toppling the headstones at Evergreen Cemetery.

Thursday, crews were chopping down some of the 41 water oaks. Over the next week, all of those trees will be removed, and the headstones will be put back in place.

Ocean Springs aldermen have agreed to pay more than $11,000 to get rid of the trees. Water oaks are not a protected tree in Ocean Springs.
