Rodney Batts steps up to the plate at MGCCC as the Bulldogs baseball coach

PERKINSTON, MS (WLOX) -

Rodney Batts spent 12 years as an assistant coach at Delta State University and felt it was time for him to take over a baseball program.

On Tuesday the MGCCC Board of Trustees approved his hiring and says he's ready to lead Gulf Coast to championship titles.

"When this job came open I was excited," Batts said.  "I knew about the success and the capabilities of this program."

Over the years Gulf Coast has won 15 State Championships but failed to crack post-season play in 2014.  The Bulldogs haven't captured the MACJC Championship since 1997.

Dr. Ladd Taylor, Vice President of the Perkinston Campus said,"Rodney Batts comes to Gulf Coast with tons of experience as a player and coach. He fits right into the type of person we want to take our baseball program to the next level."

Batts knows the MACJC is always competitive and he's excited to get an opportunity to lead the Bulldogs.

"What drew me to this job is the potential for success," stated Batts. "We have a chance to win, and win the right way. We have to be able to keep these local kids here and want them to come to Gulf Coast. There are a lot of good teams and good coaches in this league."
