BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - School is out for the summer but for families struggling to put food on the table, the summer can bring added challenges. Back Bay Mission in Biloxi has launched a feeding program for June, July, August to help make sure children won't miss meals.
The bags were stuffed with meats, cheeses, cereals and other food intended to help feed a family for a week. Members of Keesler Air Force Base's Top Three Association said they decided to offer support for the summer feeding program because they wanted to give back to the community.
"We did a bunch of fundraisers. Bake sales and burrito sales," said Master Sergeant Laurie Holmes. "We will be feeding 50 families for June, July and August by all the fundraisers that we've raised the money and then we went out and shopped."
Back Bay Mission officials said because of the slow job market, families don't have much money to shop for food. The program was started out of concern that some children may not otherwise get the nutrition they need.
"Because we know that young people are out of school. I know many kids get their lunch in school, so there's a possibility they wouldn't have lunch," said Charles Brown, Back Bay Mission Director. "We were afraid that they weren't going to be able to get the nutrition the food that they need. These young people are growing like weeds. We know they take a lot of food."
Some parents said feeding hungry children over the summer time can be a financial strain. So for June, July and August there will be a different group of 50 families who receive the donation.
Gladys Quince said she was grateful for the donation. "When you've got a house full of boys. Kids in general. They run out of stuff and they need extra stuff also to feed them, so it helps out a lot."
"It really means a lot as far as me being a hard working parent and a parent of four," said Domonique Floyd. "I'm very thankful for it. It helps me out a lot."
Back Bay Mission officials say Community Bank and attorney Judy Guice also helped sponsor the summer feeding program.
