GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Flooding and smelly sewage nightmares could be a thing of the past for some Gulfport residents. That's because on Tuesday, council members approved a $30 million general obligation bond.

That type of bond could be used for a variety of city projects, however, leaders say, the money will go specifically toward projects in the city's 2013 water and sewer master plan.

"As the public is well aware, Gulfport has a very bad deteriorating water and sewer system. We have pipes that are collapsing. We have homes that have sewage and water back ups with just even regular rains," said Ward 5 Councilman Myles Sharp.

City leaders say they hope to eliminate some of those headaches for residents with the general obligation bond, or GO bond.

"We would have typically used a revenue bond used for water and sewer. But our bond council and our consultants came back to us and pointed out that we could save a lot of money for the tax payers by doing it under a GO bond, but still funding those projects under our sewer master plan," Sharp explained.

Whether it's a flooded backyard or driveway, city leaders say they have heard many of the same complaints from residents.

"Some of the worst cases, for example, Hatten Lane in the north part of the city. There is a man hole that overflows when it rains. We're aware of it. The DEQ's aware of it. This bond will fix that project," said Public Works Director Wayne Miller.

Part of the repayment plan for the bond money will come from a rate increase.
