Update: Dogs attack cyclist on Natchez Trace Parkway

MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

New warnings have been issued after a cyclist was attacked by a pack of dogs on the Natchez Trace.

Parkway officials are recommending some to steer clear the stretch of road at mile marker 113.

Folks at Indian Cycle shop in Ridgeland expressed concern Tuesday about the dog attack. The co-owner, Tom Martin said dog attacks happen on occasion, but when a pack of dogs go after a cyclist that is extremely worrisome. "Tom did you hear about the attack on the trace. I was just made aware of it as you came in today. Matter of fact, one of our customers was talking about what happened. It's tragic, frightening."

The Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444 mile long stretch that is designed as a bike route. But a warning comes after a cyclist was traveling southbound at a scenic location, mile marker 113.

A 64-year-old bicyclist was attacked Monday morning as he was riding alongside the reservoir. 8-10 dogs came at him from both sides of the road according to officials.

Natchez Trace officials say this was an isolated attack, but the National Park Service recommends bicyclist, hikers and horseback riders use other sections of the parkway until further notice.

We asked Martin what a cyclist should do if a dog approaches, his reply, "It's our advice is to stop get off the bike, put the bike between you and the dog. Yell at the dog, most people carry water bottles on their bicycle, that is something you can stream at the dog or throw it at him."

The unidentified rider was bitten several times but escaped. Martin says many use a chemical repellent called HALT. "The other thing we sell is a product called Halt. It's a pepper spray the U.S. Postal Service gives to their employees. It's a product that streams about 10 feet so as a dog approaches you are able to stop him in his tracks."

Anyone with information on the location of the dogs or the location(s) or name(s) of the dog's owner(s) should contact Madison County Emergency Management Office at 601-859-4188 or the Natchez Trace Parkway at 1-800-300- PARK (7275) with information.
