ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA, June 12, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The University of Adelaide Visiting Research Fellow Dr. Rafiqul Islam has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in scientific research.

A senior member of The University of Adelaide lab until 2011, Dr. Islam is now a visiting research fellow. He is involved in research on producing wheat-Hordeum marinum substitution lines in the search for genes conferring salinity and water-logging tolerance. Dr. Islam has made several international breakthroughs in the field of cytogenetics and genetic engineering. He has received several awards from The University of Adelaide, published dozens of scientific papers in top-ranking scientific journals, and attended and presented papers in many international symposiums on wheat and barley since 1981. In fact, Dr. Islam produced the world's first wheat-barley addition and substitution lines, which he has distributed free of cost to well over 100 laboratories in 20 countries. In addition, he developed a system for haploid wheat production using maize crosses.

He has been working on wheat cytogenetics and genetic engineering of wheat and barley at The University of Adelaide for 41 years. Before moving to Australia, Dr. Islam spent the years 1963 to 1970 involved in research on rice at the Agricultural Research Institute and Atomic Energy Centre in Dhaka. He holds a Ph.D. from the Waite Institute Campus of The University of Adelaide, and a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in agriculture from Dhaka University.
