Man begins history-making swim across Lake Pontchartrain

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

A history-making swim began Wednesday night as 33-year-old Matt Mosley dove in to Lake Pontchartrain.

He began his swim at 9 p.m.

Mosley says he is swimming across the lake to celebrate Pontchartrain's recovery. He's working with 'Save Our Lake' to focus on the positives of the lake and raise awareness of problems with Louisiana's coastline.

Mosley says he has been training for his 26-mile swim for six months. He says he will have a lot of help in the water.

"I have two great support boats," said Mosley. "We've got legendary jazz musician David Amram on the boat and then at 4:30 in the morning, Poppa Molly is going to be coming out with Uganda Roberts - so that's going to be great. We've got art, we've got lasers [and] music. It's going to be kind of like a movable parade on the water."

Mosley expects to be on the Northshore anywhere from 12 to 14 hours from his departure.
