After Further Review: Extra noise at day two of Saints minicamp

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) -

Coach Sean Payton isn't wasting any time in confronting last year's road demons. For the first time ever in minicamp, he brought out the crowd noise simulator during team drills Wednesday. Normally this doesn't happen until late training camp or the pre-season. Instead, Payton decided to bring it on now.

And why not?

The games that count on the road are never played in stone silence. The earlier they can get accustomed to it, the better prepared the team will be and the better chance they'll have to improve on their 3-5 road record a year ago.

Other Observations

  • Another day at the office for Ryan Griffin. Griffin got the majority of the second team reps Wednesday and took full advantage. He had three touchdown passes in the 7-on-7 red zone drills and, as I stated Tuesday, just seems so much more confident and decisive with his throws. He did get picked off late by Terrance Frederick.
  • The secondary and linebackers were very active in pass coverage Wednesday. There were several pass break ups throughout the practice. In fact, during the first team 7-on-7 drills, Drew Brees had four of his five passes broken up. Two of those were by Kenny Vaccaro.
  • Brandon Coleman Wednesday continued to struggle with some drops. Most receivers out of their breaks see the ball and quickly get their hands up to grab the ball out of the air. Coleman doesn't do that; his hands rise slower than others. Even when he catches the ball, his hands are in a cup-like fashion under the ball or it's caught against his body.
  • Payton said after practice that when the season ended last year he felt like Kenny Stills was a player they need to get the ball to more. He's right. Stills averaged 20.0 yards a catch last year and has been active with big catches so far in minicamp.
