Millington Navy employee steals $22K by using identity of dead sailors' families

(WMC) - A Millington Navy employee pleaded guilty to stealing more than $22,000 by filing false claims with the identities of family members of dead sailors.

Assigned to the Navy Personnel Command Onboard Naval Support Activity Mid-South, 45-year-old Donna Brown's primary duties included coordinating travel and reimbursement claims for Navy families of deceased active duty sailors.

Brown filed roughly 19 false claims for travel reimbursement using the personal identifying information—such as social security numbers—of family members of deceased Navy sailors, according to a Department of Justice news release received Wednesday. She deposited the money received into bank accounts controlled by her and her family members.

Officials scheduled a September 11 sentencing after she admitted to the crimes, committed from June 2012 to March 2013, Tuesday. She faces a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years supervised release.
