Authorities believe domestic dispute escalated into shooting

ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) -

Residents in Orleans Place subdivision in St. Martin say they are shocked to learn about the early morning shooting Tuesday in their neighborhood that put two people in critical condition.

They say their neighborhood is a quiet and peaceful place.

"They say they heard gunshots and I believe they heard some other kind of noise. I don't know what or if there was commotion over there or not," said neighbor James Garvin.

"He hearing a shotgun and that's all. I wake up and I am scared. I check my little boy and he's ok. I go back to sleep," said neighbor Giselle Marquz.

Neighbors say they're surprised to learn about a shooting at a home next door to them.

Around 2 a.m. Jackson County Sheriff's deputies responded to the incident and Jackson County Sheriff Charles Britt says investigators believe they know what sparked it.

"We responded officers. Once we got on scene, we found two victims. Apparently, a domestic situation had turned violent. Both subjects were transported to the hospital and we're currently conducting an investigation," said Britt.

Though the victims aren't being identified because of the investigation, Britt did confirm they are a man and woman and were first listed in critical condition from the gunshot wounds. Britt says the weapon used in the shooting was recovered from the scene. Neighbors say the shooting victims have lived in their subdivision for about a year and seemed friendly.

"It's very sad and very bad. Never never seen nothing here. It's a good neighborhood," said Marquz.

"I'm kind of shocked to hear that about a gunshot. But I guess it could happen anywhere," said Garvin.

Neighbors say there were children living in the home, however, they were picked up by family members.

Sheriff Britt says the woman who was shot had surgery Tuesday and once investigators are able to, they will be interviewing both the man and woman.
