Former St. Martin High School All-American Chantel Hilliard excels in pro ranks

ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) - Chantel Hilliard is back on the Mississippi Gulf Coast until her next professional basketball assignment is finalized.

She and her sister, Chalandra, both donated their time at the South Mississippi All-Star Basketball Showcase at St. Martin High School last week.

Chalandra,  is a 2002 St. Martin graduate and played basketball at Mississippi State.  She's now a teacher at St. Martin High School. Chantel received her diploma from St. Martin in 2008.

As a member of the St. Martin Lady Jackets basketball team Hilliard was a two-time Division 7-4A MVP.

As as a senior she bagged 25 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks per game and was named a McDonald's High School All-American honorable mention. She went on to play four years at Auburn.

Chantel said,"I graduated early so in 2012 once our season was over with I tried to pursue my next career in basketball."

After received her degree in political science, Chantel decided to use her 6-feet, 2-inches to her advantage and traveled to Europe.

"I went and played semi-pro and as soon as I left semi-pro I had a deal in Romania and went over there and did what I could and as soon as our season was over I went to Finland and had an amazing season,"stated Hilliard. She added,"I was MVP of the season and won first place."@

Hilliard netted 15 points and 10 rebounds in Romania and picked up her game in Finland where she netted 26 points and 16 rebounds. Her ultimate goal is a career in the WNBA.

Hilliard said,"I just signed with an agency and as soon as they find me a job, I'll go back."
