Boy killed in tubing accident remembered on baseball field

The young New Orleans boy who died in a tubing accident Memorial Day was honored by fellow athletes Tuesday with a moment of silence. Joseph Schmidt was killed after the inner tube he was riding on hit a tree.

It happened on the Wolf River in Mississippi, north of Pass Christian.

For baseball commissioner Jeremy Mancheski, the news is difficult to share.

"Today we had a, we have to deal with a terrible tragedy," Mancheski explained to a group of players. "A young player in our nine and 10 boys baseball league, Joseph Schmidt, unfortunately passed away."

Nine-year-old Joseph, who played second base for his team with the Carrollton Boosters, lost his life Monday after a holiday boating excursion went horribly wrong.

"When I saw the mom run to the boat crying, and the dad was screaming to just leave everything and just get on the boat, and that's when I knew something was bad," said witness Jamie Dennis.

Investigators said Joseph's father was driving the boat, pulling the boy and his brother on an inner tube. They went around a bend, and the tube hit a tree. Joseph died two hours later of blunt force trauma to his head and neck.

One of seven children, Joseph and his family are well-known to the booster club. Fellow teammates and their parents said Joseph was a star player whose mom and dad were always in the stands.

"Absolutely devastated for something like that to happen to such a wonderful family," said parent Greg August.

August's son, Joey, who played with Joseph, said, "I thought it was really bad, and I didn't feel good about it at all."

When Joseph's team takes the field later this week, they'll wear his number - 2 - on their jerseys. They'll also receive support from counselors to help them cope with the sudden loss. Jeremy

Mancheski said everyone in the league is feeling the pain.

"You get to be very close to young men in a summer full of baseball," he said. "You start out as maybe acquaintances, and you develop into a family by the end of the summer."

Now, this family will be missing its center because a life was taken far too soon.

Joseph Schmidt was a student at St. Andrew's Episcopal School. He'll be laid to rest Thursday.
