Southeastern Louisiana baseball coach Matt Riser hails from Picayune

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - In his first season as Southeastern Louisiana baseball coach, Matt Riser guided the Lions to the Southland Conference Tournament Championship.

Southeastern Louisiana opens the Baton Rouge Regional 2:00 p.m. Friday facing LSU.

The second game Friday night at 7:00 p.m. sends Houston against Bryant.

While the LSU Tigers are coming off the SEC Conference Tournament Championship and eight straight wins, the Lions have run off six consecutive victories.  LSU beat Southeastern Louisiana 7-3 in February.

The Lions posted a 37-23 record and feature senior pitcher Andro Cutura who posted 10 wins and 2 losses and a 1.72 ERA.

Riser a Picayune, Mississippi native, began his coaching career at Tulane after playing with the Green Wave in 2005-06. During his senior season he belted three home runs, 37 RBI and 16 doubles.  During his junior campaign he helping Tulane reach the College World Series in 2005.

Riser played at Pearl River Community College and was coached by Bay St. Louis native Jay Artigues, the former Southeastern Louisiana head coach and current Lions director of athletics.

After coaching at Tulane, Riser became the primary hitting coach at Southeastern Louisiana under head coach Jay Artigues and worked with the Lions outfielders.

Riser earned a biomedical engineering degree from Tulane in 2007.  He and his wife Jeanette reside in Hammond.
