20-year-old charged with murder of JSU chair

MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Madison Police have arrested the man they believe killed J.S.U. chair Dr. Garrick Shelton.

On Tuesday, around 8:35 A.M., investigators with the Madison Police Department and the Jackson Police Department, located and arrested Melvin Joshua Potts at on Saint Charles Street in Jackson.

Potts has since been booked with one count of Murder and is being held at the Madison County Detention Center with no bond being set.

The Jackson State University department chair was found stabbed to death in his home, on Harris Lane, May 21.

Madison Police Chief Gene Waldrop said, "Up to this point, we can say they were acquaintances.  Were still early in the interview phases.  That part of the investigation, we haven't got to that part yet."

The murder weapon was recovered at the scene.

Potts was arrested less than a mile from where Dr. Shelton's car was recovered after the murder.

"Evidence between the house on Harris Lane, the vehicle, several pieces of evidence have been sent to the crime lab and were proceeding with all of that," said Chief Waldrop.

The Madison Police Department would like to thank the MBI, the Hinds County Sheriff's Office, the Jackson Police Department,  and the Jackson State University Police.
